Understanding Afgan Peace Process

Recently,Joe biden has said that America will withdraw all their troops from the country of Afganistan.

Historical Background

On September 2001 , in an attack around 3000 people got killed .After investigation America quickly identified that main accused was head of islamist terror group Al-qaeda Osama Bin Laden & also refused to hand him over .In retaliation,a month after attack US started air strikes against Afganistan .Since then US has deployed its millitants in Afganisatn to end deadly attacks by Taliban .

Cost of war

According to the statement of Afgan president Ashraf Ghani -around 45000 members of the security forces has been killed since 2014.

A UN report said that more than 32000 civilians had died .Moreover,apart from deaths ,military deployment in Afganisatn costs America too much .Hence ,to stop this costly exercise and bloody conflict ,it is important to initiate peace process.

India’s Role

India basically supports all efforts for peace & reconcillation in Afganistan. In addtion to that ,India has also invested resources in Afganisatan development. So ,for India stability of Afganisatn is much important .

India’s Interest

1. Afganisatn is a gateway to central asian republics which is rich in oil and minerals .
2. There are a lot of projects like Zaranj Delaram Highway ,Afganisatn India friendship dam(Salma dam)which basically offer a lot of opportunities for Indian companies .Moreover,India has also invested billions in small development projects in Afganisatn .
3. India has also faced challenges of state sponsored terrorism from Pakistan. Thus setting up a friendly government in Afganisatn can help in tackling Pakistan supported terrorism.

Way Ahead

• Peace and stability in the region of Afganistan is much important but the peace process should be Afgan led ,Afgan owned & Afgan controlled.
• Though the step taken by USA to bring back millitary forces from Afganistan by September 2021 but still road is not clear.
• To save people from the concern of terrorism it is very iportant to adopt Comprehensive Convention on International terorism.
